Retailer moving into former Havertys location, other properties gaining interest

But that doesn't mean there's no activity out there, especially with interest rates hovering near historic lows.

A national retailer may be coming soon to the former Havertys Furniture store in Hanover Center , the space's leasing agent said Thursday.

A single tenant would lease the entire 46,000 square feet, said Steve Warwick, a partner in the Maus, Warwick, Matthews commercial real estate firm in Wilmington.

An announcement may come in a few weeks, he said.

The old Havertys store has been vacant since the furniture retailer moved to 1319 Military Cutoff Road in October 2007.

The space has been used sporadically for various purposes since then, and the New Hanover County ABC Board at one time considered it for a liquor store location.

Warwick pointed to other retail activity in the area, including the Whole Foods going into the former Lowes Foods space across Oleander Drive. He said, however, that the new Havertys tenant would have nothing to do with food.
