County Clerk's Office is home again

ALBANY -- The County Clerk's Office is back home on the first floor of the Albany County Courthouse after more than six years at an uptown location while the courthouse was renovated.

County Clerk Thomas Clingan said Friday as he unpacked --- the office was closed for Veterans Day -- there would be no interruption in service come Monday. The doors will open at 8:30 a.m., a half-hour earlier than in the past.

Closing time at the busy office will be 4:30 p.m. Business hours coincide with the hours the security crew operates the metal detectors at the courthouse, which fronts on Eagle Street and has a back entrance on Lodge Street.

For the last six-and-a-half years, the office had conducted business at 32 N. Russell Road, on the edge of Westgate Shopping Center off Central Avenue.

The renovation of the courthouse is the first in the landmark building's 95-year history. The work was expected to take three to four years, but more than six years later the project is almost completed. During the renovation, the general contractor was fired, causing a delay, lawsuits were filed, and more bonds were approved by county lawmakers.
